PAN Alert: Tell NY lawmakers to protect children from lindane!
|
A new law protecting children from the pesticide lindane is moving forward in the New York Assembly. We need your help to be sure lawmakers pass this legislation that bans use of lindane for headlice on children under 16 and pregnant women. Act today: Tell the Chair of the NY Assembly Health Committee to ban lindane! Lindane is a known neurotoxin that can cause seizures, damage the nervous system, and weaken the immune system. Exposure to this organochlorine insecticide may also cause cancer and disrupt hormone systems. Lindane products to control lice and scabies have been banned in California since 2002, with no adverse effects. Legislation promoting similar bans is moving forward in several other states. New York bill A06802 is scheduled to come before the Assembly Health Committee later this month. Email today! Tell NY lawmakers to pass A06802. Send your email before April 29th – the letter below will be delivered to Committee Chair Richard Gottfried immediately. A recent report on the California ban of lindane shampoos and lotions found that health professionals don’t miss lindane products, and lindane no longer contaminates California waters. Lindane is no longer used on pets or in agriculture, and the chemical has already been banned in more than 50 countries, including most recently Mexico. The long-lasting pesticide is now being targeted for global phaseout under an international treaty called the Stockholm Convention. Effective alternatives to lindane are clearly available. Thank you for taking action! |
